First half of the City Council candidate forum opens some eyes

Last night was the first one of two City Council candidate forums. The Hudson County View publisher/editor John Heinis fired off the questions and they were focused and significant.

Some candidates and candidate slates provided good answers or odd answers and some provided sunlight that they have little to no understanding on the issues and what answers are viable.

One observer posted a number of observations on X and has no affiliation or connection to this website.

The topic of Michael Russo's aquatic pier park featuring a diesel submarine was discussed. Former councilman Dave Mellow sunk both pointing out the costs is simply prohibitive for such an ambitious offering.

It's unclear in any serious vein how such an aquatic water park re, pier pool on the Hudson would be paid for with no price tag even remotely referenced. That is Michael Russo's appeal to the low information voter.

Some will claim that there's no submarine with this aquatic park on the Hudson? Are you sure? For $600 million or so, doesn't Hoboken deserve a submarine of at least WWII vintage with its Hudson River pier pool?

It's no more insane than some who pushed a $300 million new high school featuring an ice skating rink while trying to keep the public in the dark. (Looking at you, Councilwoman Emily Jabbour.)

Is there a connection between the insane spending utopias of Mike Russo and Emily Jabbour?

Laura Miani on the Ruben Ramos slate pointed out an obvious budget issue that the process shouldn't require six months and former Councilman Dave Mello highlighted the costs driven by built-in (and growing) personnel costs. He added that Pier A is unsuitable for Russo's aquatic park.

Murray cites lack of small businesses in SW Hoboken. Would like to lure in visitors from JC. Claims pier pool would be self-funded by admission costs for out of town guests.

Who actually is buying the idea outside visitors are going to fund the costs of Russo's aquatic park?

Hoboken Election 2025 Note: Some observers were not pleased with the performance of entire slates with one writing:

Telling and not inaccurate.

There's also a question about the costs of federal lawsuits to protect "neighbors," re: illegal aliens. How would Hoboken pay into seven figure costs for same?

What is a "sanctuary city" about besides flouting US law? It has nothing to do with virtue but 21st century slave labor - serfdom. Paying the exploited who often carry a bill from drug cartels, (Maryland Man anyone?) bypassing legal immigrants, and American citizens while thrusting the costs: schools, health care, etc on to the citizenry. That's inadequate in describing the human toll with a high percentage of women sexually abused while crossing the southern border. That's not even addressing the horrors of child trafficking.

The truth is there are no "neighbors" of illegal aliens residing in Hoboken. They are exploited, low wage indentured servants for the wealthy who are happy to shift the full labor cost on to the middle class. It's a subsidy for the wealthy.

That may be many things but virtue it is not.
